Stay-n-Touch
Stay-n-Touch is an old program with a new name that I started back in 2007 shortly after I started my organization. The program was designed to give FREE cell phones to homeless people in an effort to allow them to make and receive phone calls from potential employers, doctors as well as keep them in touch with family and friends.
The cell phones are gently used and come loaded with a $10 prepaid card on them. Many of the phones originally passed out to homeless people way back when the program started are still being used today by the very same homeless person they were given to. In fact, 21 of the 30 phones given away to homeless people, low income families and seniors are still being used today.
November 2008 the cell phone outreach got a new start and I was able to start passing out FREE cell phone once again. However this time the cell phone outreach also included people living with HIV and AIDS that are either extreme to low income and or homeless. By December the cell phone outreach was back and much stronger then before.
December 19, 2008 in honor of my 40th birthday I named the cell phone outreach “Stay-n-Touch” This name was very personal for me as are all the outreaches and services I offer through my organization. Staying in touch and staying on top of my many health concerns, medical appointments and other things like food, shelter, clothing, transportation concerns as well as my physical safety were all done from a laptop by way of free calling from computer to computer as well as tools like my blog and email. My cell phone was also key to my survival, without these I would have fallen through the large sink holes created by a system that is designed to fail the people is was meant to serve.
Today Stay-n-Touch has supplied over 120 FREE cell phones to homeless people, low income families, seniors and people living with HIV and AIDS. As I continue to look for ways to grow this program I am very encouraged and humbled by all who have embraced it and all who have benefited from it.
It is the best feeling to have someone tell me “The phone you gave to me helped me get a job”
If you would like to donate your old gently used cell phone and charger to allow someone to “Stay-n-Touch” then please contact me for details.
